Why Study in Netherlands?
6 compelling reasons to choose Netherlands for your studies.
Highest English Proficiency in Europe
The Netherlands consistently ranks #1 globally for English proficiency among non-native countries. Over 2,000 bachelor's and master's programs are taught entirely in English, meaning you can live and work without a language barrier while still having the option to learn Dutch for deeper cultural integration.
Innovative Problem-Based Learning
Dutch universities pioneered Problem-Based Learning (PBL), an interactive, student-centered approach where you solve real-world cases in small tutorial groups. This system builds critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills highly valued by employers, making graduates more adaptable than those from traditional lecture-based systems.
Strategic Gateway to Europe
Located at the logistical heart of Europe, the Netherlands offers unparalleled access. Rotterdam is Europe's largest port, and Amsterdam Schiphol connects you to 300+ destinations. This central position, combined with a strong digital infrastructure, makes it a hub for multinational corporations and startups, offering abundant internships and networking opportunities.
Generous Post-Study Work Visa
The 'Orientation Year' visa allows non-EU graduates to live and work in the Netherlands for up to 12 months without a work permit. You can take any job or start a business during this period. If you find a qualifying job afterward, you can transition to a highly skilled migrant visa, which offers a reduced 30% tax ruling on your salary for five years.

Admission Requirements
Recognized Bachelor's Degree
You need a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Dutch universities use the Nuffic system to evaluate foreign credentials. An Indian 3-year bachelor's from a NAAC A+ or top-tier university is generally accepted, but some research universities may require a 4-year degree or an additional pre-master's program.
GMAT/GRE Scores
For many business and economics master's programs (like at Erasmus or UvA), a GMAT score of 600+ or a GRE equivalent is mandatory. For technical programs at TU Delft or TU/e, a GRE with strong quantitative scores (e.g., 160+ Quant) is often required for non-EU applicants.
Course Descriptions & Thesis Proposal
Dutch universities are strict about matching your prior coursework to the master's program. You'll need to provide detailed course descriptions from your bachelor's. For research master's, a preliminary thesis proposal outlining your research interests is often required.
Nuffic Certificate for Entry
As an Indian student, you need a Nuffic certificate to apply for an entry visa (MVV). This involves submitting your English test scores and academic documents to Nuffic for verification. The process can take up to 4 weeks, so start early. It's a mandatory step before the university can apply for your visa.

Cost Breakdown
Estimated annual expenses for international students in Netherlands. All figures in USD.
Tuition (Public Research University)
$9,500 - $22,000/yr
Bachelor's programs are generally at the lower end, while specialized master's and MBA programs at the higher end. EU/EEA students pay a statutory fee of ~$2,500.
Tuition (Private/University of Applied Sciences)
$8,500 - $12,000/yr
Universities of Applied Sciences (HBOs) are generally more affordable and focus on practical skills. Master's programs here are often cheaper than at research universities.
Accommodation
$5,000 - $9,000/yr
A room in a shared student house costs $400-$700/month. Amsterdam and Utrecht are the priciest. University housing is limited; apply the moment you accept your offer. Expect to pay 2-3 months' deposit.
Food & Groceries
$2,500 - $3,500/yr
Cooking at home is economical. Budget for €200-€300/month. Supermarkets like Albert Heijn and Lidl are common. Eating out is expensive; a cheap restaurant meal is ~$18.
Health Insurance
$1,200 - $1,800/yr
Mandatory for all residents. International students with a part-time job must take Dutch public insurance (~$140/month). Students without a job can use a cheaper private international student insurance (~$50-$80/month).
Transportation
$600 - $1,200/yr
A second-hand bike costs $100-$200 and is the primary mode of transport. For trains, a Dal Vrij subscription (~$120/month) gives unlimited off-peak travel, ideal for exploring.
Books & Study Materials
$500 - $1,000/yr
Books are expensive when bought new. Many students buy second-hand from student unions or use the university library's digital copies. Budget for printing costs as well.
Personal & Miscellaneous
$1,500 - $2,500/yr
Includes a mobile plan (~$25/month), clothing, entertainment, and a small buffer for unexpected costs. A cinema ticket is around $14.

Visa Process
University Sponsorship
Unlike many countries, you do not apply for the visa yourself. Your host university in the Netherlands acts as your 'recognized sponsor' and applies for both the MVV and VVR on your behalf at the Dutch Immigration Service (IND).
Nuffic Certificate Application
Before the university can start, you must obtain a Nuffic certificate. You upload your English test scores and academic documents to the Nuffic portal. This verifies your English proficiency and diploma authenticity. Processing takes 2-4 weeks.
Financial Proof & Living Expenses
You must transfer the full living expenses for one year (approx. $13,500 for 2024/25) plus the first year's tuition fee into the university's escrow account. This proves you can support yourself. The funds are returned to you once you open a Dutch bank account.
TB Test Requirement
Indian nationals are required to undergo a Tuberculosis (TB) test upon arrival in the Netherlands. You must do this at the Municipal Health Service (GGD) within 3 months of receiving your residence permit. This is a mandatory step to finalize your permit.
MVV Collection & Travel
Once the IND approves the application (usually within 60 days), you will receive a notification to collect your MVV (entry visa sticker) from the Dutch embassy or consulate in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru). You must travel to the Netherlands within 90 days.
Registration & Biometrics
Upon arrival, you register your address at the local municipality (gemeente) to get a Citizen Service Number (BSN). You then make an appointment at an IND desk to provide biometrics (fingerprints, photo) and collect your physical residence permit card.
