Why Study in United Kingdom?
6 compelling reasons to choose United Kingdom for your studies.
Shorter, Intensive Programs
Most UK undergraduate degrees are 3 years and master's programs are just 1 year, compared to 4 and 2 years in the US. This means you save on a full year of tuition and living costs, entering the workforce faster with a globally recognized qualification.
The 2-Year Graduate Route Visa
The UK's post-study work visa allows international graduates to stay and work, or look for work, for 2 years after completing their degree (3 years for PhDs). There is no minimum salary threshold and no job offer requirement at the time of application, offering unmatched flexibility.
Home to 4 of the World's Top 10 Universities
According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, the UK boasts Imperial College London (2nd), Oxford (3rd), Cambridge (5th), and UCL (9th). A degree from these institutions provides a significant competitive advantage in global job markets, particularly in finance, law, and tech.
NHS Healthcare Access
As an international student on a visa for more than 6 months, you pay an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your application, currently £776 per year. This grants you full access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS), meaning most medical consultations and hospital treatments are free at the point of use.

Admission Requirements
Bachelor's Degree
A strong undergraduate degree is required. For Indian students, this typically means a 3-year Bachelor's with a First Class (60%+) or a high Upper Second Class (55%+) from a recognized institution. Top universities often require a minimum of 65-70% or a specific GPA equivalent.
English Language Proficiency
IELTS Academic requirements are generally higher for postgraduate study, typically 6.5-7.0 overall with no band below 6.0-6.5. For law, journalism, or humanities, a 7.0-7.5 is common. Some universities waive this if you scored above 70-80% in English in your Standard XII.
Statement of Purpose (SOP)
A critical, course-specific essay (500-1,000 words) detailing your academic background, professional experience, reasons for choosing that specific course and university, and your long-term career goals. It must show a clear link between your past experience and future aspirations.
Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
Usually 2-3 academic or professional references are required. At least one should be an academic referee who can vouch for your research and analytical skills. Professional LORs are valuable for MBA or work-experience-focused programs. They must be on official letterhead.
GMAT/GRE Scores
GMAT is often mandatory for MBA and some Finance programs; a competitive score is 650+. A few top-tier Economics and Computer Science programs may require or recommend the GRE. Check specific course pages, as this is less common in the UK than in the US.
Test Prep
Ace your standardized exams with free practice tests and study materials.
Cost Breakdown
Estimated annual expenses for international students in United Kingdom. All figures in USD.
Tuition (Humanities/Social Sciences)
$18,000 - $28,000/yr
Applies to courses like History, English, and Sociology at most Russell Group universities. Laboratory-based and clinical programs are significantly higher.
Tuition (STEM/Engineering)
$28,000 - $45,000/yr
Covers lab fees and equipment access. Imperial College and UCL are at the top of this range. A 1-year MSc in Computer Science can cost up to $45,000.
Tuition (MBA/Medicine)
$45,000 - $70,000/yr
MBA programs at LBS, Oxford Saïd, and Cambridge Judge are premium-priced. Clinical years for Medicine are the most expensive undergraduate courses.
Accommodation
$6,500 - $12,000/yr
University halls in cities like Sheffield or Nottingham cost less, while private rentals in London zones 1-2 can easily exceed $1,200/month. Bills are often included in university accommodation.
Food & Groceries
$2,500 - $4,500/yr
Cooking at home significantly reduces costs. A student can eat well on £40-£50 per week. Eating out or ordering takeaways frequently will push this to the higher end.
Transport
$600 - $2,000/yr
Many students walk or cycle. London requires an Oyster card with a student discount (30% off travelcards). Inter-city travel with a 16-25 Railcard saves 1/3 on train fares.
Health Insurance (IHS)
$1,000/yr
The Immigration Health Surcharge is a mandatory fee of £776 per year of your visa, paid upfront for the entire visa duration. This grants full NHS access.
Books, Supplies & Personal
$1,500 - $3,000/yr
Includes course materials, mobile phone plan (£10-£20/month), clothing, and entertainment. A student cinema ticket averages £8.

Visa Process
Receive Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Once you unconditionally accept an offer and pay a deposit, your university will issue a CAS number. This is a unique digital document required for your visa application. You can only apply for your visa 6 months before your course start date.
Gather Financial Evidence
You must prove you have enough money to pay for your first year's tuition fees and living costs. Living costs are set at £1,334/month for London and £1,023/month for outside London, up to 9 months. The funds must be held in your or a parent's account for 28 consecutive days.
Complete the Online Application
Fill out the form on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website. You'll need your CAS number, passport details, and travel history. Pay the visa application fee of £490 and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
Upload Documents and Book Biometrics
Scan and upload all supporting documents (passport, CAS, financial evidence, TB test certificate, ATAS if applicable, and academic qualifications). You'll be directed to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
Attend the Biometrics Appointment
Visit the VAC on your appointment date. Bring your original passport and appointment confirmation letter. Your biometrics will be collected. You may have the option for a 'Keep My Passport' service for an extra fee.
Receive Decision and Collect BRP/eVisa
A decision is usually made within 3 weeks. If approved, you'll get a vignette (sticker) in your passport valid for 90 days to enter the UK. You must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a designated Post Office within 10 days of arrival, or by the date your vignette expires.
